I'd been asked for years if we could get a hold of the Ibanez fret and nut files. Well, Hiroshima has started remanufacturing them in the old style, and although the romantic notion remains that they are not as good as those from the old days, they are still pretty darn good. Drew Gallahar of the famous Blue Guitar Workshop in San Diego comments on the nut files: "In my opinion, these are the best nut files on the market - period. They combine the best of each of the alternative nut files out there. The cut of these files is fast, but at the same time very smooth. The wedge shape of the cut means no binding in the slot while filing. The tapered profile towards the end of the file allows you to cut low nuts with much less danger of gouging the headstock or a tuning gear shaft. A couple of mild criticisms. I wish cut widths were arranged like the Stew-Mac nut files. Those files have both small cuts on one file, the medium cuts on the next, and the largest cuts on the third. The Ibanez file have the cuts spread out over all three files, which is a little confusing to use. Also, one of the real old timers at the shop noted that the angle of the wedge cut on the new files is wider than the old ones.
He preferred the narrower angle of the old files, but still loves the new ones. Finally, I wish the width of the various cuts was specifically stated somewhere, as I like to know what the actual cut I am using is. As it is I just have to guess what edge is best."
Drew Gallahar gets his wish. To respond to this last comment, and I have a strong suspicion that Drew will labor over the above "published" comments, the sizes are: 0.012", 0.016", 0.032", 0.042", 0.052", and .060".
The Ibanez fret file set includes the three pictured at left. To be frank, I haven't heard too many comments on them yet, but as soon as we do, we'll put the news right here. Sizes are: 0.079", 0.098", and 0.118" with a coarse and fine cut on each file.
