BRACEWOOD Much of our bracewood starts from a split face, and many of the pieces sent to you will have a split face. However, some of the pieces are sawn. A unit in the Adirondack and Carpathian spruce is usually considered to be the equivalent of about 1-1/2" X 1-1/2" X 20 - 22". In Sitka and Englemann a unit is about 1-1/2" X 3/4" X 22. It's often preferred to have larger pieces of bracewood, that is, 2 or 3 units within a piece so that variability in stiffness, weight, etc. is minimized. For this reason, we usually have more than one unit in a piece.
KERFING We offer the two styles of kerfing illustrated above. These have been the easier styles to glue for most builders and manufacturers. The dimensions are 5/8" X 1/2" and the flat is about 13/64" for the standard kerfing, while the flat is about 1/2" for the reverse kerfing. (32" in length). Standard kerfing available in Honduran mahogany and Sitka spruce, reverse available in Spanish cedar.
